The University of Belize and California Baptist University (UB/CBU) Social Work Research Conference brings together researchers, practitioners, and community leaders to explore how courageous conversations and groundbreaking research can reshape the future of social science. With an emphasis on equity, justice, and inclusion, this conference aims to challenge traditional paradigms and open new pathways for social change.

Through rigorous dialogue and collective reflection, we aim to advance social science research that is more representative, ethical, and transformative in addressing the pressing issues of our time. This year’s theme, Courageous Conversation: Advancing Social Science Research, will foster critical conversations that amplify marginalized voices, promote social justice, and create inclusive spaces for collaborative knowledge production.

Attendees will get the opportunity to expand clinical and scientific perspective across social science and educational research disciplines as well as explore research perspectives across geographic borders. Attendees will be able to learn new skills while broadening their understanding of research. This is also an opportunity for networking with social science and educational scientists from across the globe.

Conference Workshop Presentations

Our workshops provide interactive, practice-oriented sessions aligned with the conference theme: “From Oppression to Healing: Rewriting Colonial Narratives for Mental Health Empowerment.” Each presentation will engage participants in critical dialogue and skill-building activities that:

  • Address Intergenerational and Racial Trauma through evidence-based strategies for healing and resilience.
  • Utilize Narrative Transformation Techniques such as storytelling and narrative therapy to reclaim identity and counter internalized oppression.
  • Advocate for Structural and Policy Change by developing actionable plans to dismantle systemic barriers and advance equity.

Workshops will highlight innovative research, practical tools, and collaborative strategies that empower practitioners, scholars, and advocates to transform mental health care into a more inclusive and culturally responsive system

International Social Work

International social work emphasizes cross-cultural collaboration and global solidarity in addressing systemic oppression and mental health disparities. This perspective recognizes that colonial legacies and structural inequities are not confined to one region—they shape mental health systems worldwide. By integrating culturally responsive practices, indigenous knowledge, and human rights frameworks, international social work promotes healing, empowerment, and social justice across borders. Through shared learning and global partnerships, practitioners can advance equitable mental health policies and interventions that honor diverse identities and lived experiences.
